After the Kansas left, the Shawnees settled across the Kansas River to the south of us.  They, too, were a civilized tribe.  The mission buildings of the Indians are standing today, and every year hundreds of visitors go through the rooms where Shawnee boys and girls once attended school.  Johnson County and Johnson Drive are named for Dr. Thomas Johnson, missionary to the Indians.  The town of Shawnee, Shawnee Avenue, and Shawnee Drive are reminders of these Indians.  Johnson County pupils attend grade and high schools bearing the name Shawnee or Shawnee Mission.
