Message from the Superintendent

Dr. Cynthia LaneWelcome to the 2010/2011 school year! On July 1, I began my job as the new superintendent of schools. District staff have been hard at work throughout the summer, getting ready for the school year. As a district, we have committed ourselves to having each student exit high school prepared for college and careers, and to ensuring that at every level, student performance will be on-track and on-time for success.

I spent this past spring in conversations with parents, community members, staff and students, and what I heard has convinced me that we have the potential, and the responsibility, to become a top-ten district, not just in this region, but in the entire nation. To reach this high level of performance, it will take all of us, students, teachers, administrators, parents and community members, working together to support academic achievement and student success.

In our schools, this will mean that principals and assistant principals will need to spend even more time in classrooms, working side by side with teachers to improve their ability to reach every child. Because of this, I have asked every principal to commit to a two-hour period every day, where they will be in classrooms, monitoring and supporting instruction. This will be a protected period of time, where principals will ask their staff not to be disturbed, except in case of a student emergency.

While it may make it more difficult to reach principals, I am convinced this new strategy of protected time for principals to be in classrooms will be of tremendous benefit to our schools, as they work to strengthen instruction and get all students to higher levels of success. I have asked all principals to communicate with their parents, and to let them know when their "protected time" will be each day.

I am excited about the new school year, and about joining together with you to work on our mission: "Inspiring Excellence: Every Grownup, Every Child, Every Day"!
