District Implemented New Science Curriculum in Grades K-5

Science came to life in elementary classrooms last school year as the district began year one of a three-year implementation of National Geographic Science curriculum in grades K-5.

The research-based program was designed by leading experts in the field and developed to engage students in real-life science explorations. The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools was one of the first school districts in the country to adopt this program. In fact, the district serves as a "showcase district" and participates in an efficacy study by National Geographic, to ensure the most successful implementation of materials possible.

The 2010-2011 implementation plan outlined piloting the program in 11 district schools last year, with 10 more schools receiving the program each year for the next two years. Schools receiving the program last school year were: Douglass, Eugene Ware, Frank Rushton, Lindbergh, McKinley, Mark Twain, M.E. Pearson, New Chelsea, White Church, Whittier and W.A. White.

The new curriculum was reviewed and chosen by a science cadre consisting of principals, instructional coaches and teachers. The cadre also developed pacing and curriculum guides to support the program and National Geographic provided a series of in-service sessions to train staff on implementation techniques.

Technology in the Classroom Video

Preparing students for the 21st century is one of the many goals of a pilot program that placed iPods and iPads in classrooms at several schools in the district this past school year. This video touches on the advantages of this technology and how it is changing the way teachers teach and the way students learn. The video is one of many featured on the district's new cable station, KCKPS TV-18. Channel 18 is available to Wyandotte County residents who are customers of Time Warner Cable.

Summer 2011 Bioscience Academy at KCKCC

"I wanted to share a brief (1 min) you tube video of some Harmon students participating in the Bioscience Academy at KCKCC (June 13th-23rd). Students learned to apply DNA technologies used in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes. They also visited a diabetes research lab at KU Medical Center. We felt the students had a great experience and that the outcomes were very positive. Enjoy!"
Jeff McFarlane, Science Teacher at J.C. Harmon High School
