Here is one of my favorite pictures
of my grandfather, Jesse
Orville Turner.
(Alice Mack Turner's husband).
He was on the school board of Vance Elementary (40s) and Washington HS (late 40s/early 50s). Grandpa worked most of his life as a bookkeeper for Armour's Meatpacking Plant. Every morning he had to withdraw money and go to the stockyards to buy cattle. He said it was a very stressful job because if he didn't withdraw enough, he'd get chewed out for not being able to buy enough cattle at the auction prices. If he withdrew too much, he got chewed out because the company lost interest on the money.
In 1951 when KC flooded, he had to go by boat to his office on the 3rd floor of Armour's main office and retrieve as many files as he could get.
