Transportation Information for Extreme Cold Weather

Posted Thursday, January 24, 2019

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools knows winter weather can be challenging when we experience extreme cold temperatures.  We want to inform you that on Friday, January 25, 2019, all KCKPS school bus routes will be running as usual; to and from school. As a precaution, dress appropriately for cold weather as you are waiting for the school bus. Appropriate cold weather clothes include, but are not limited to coats, heavy jackets, hats, mittens or gloves and boots.

Students should be on time at the bus stop. However, sometimes buses will be late due to weather and/or road conditions, and in those cases, students are not expected to wait more than 15 minutes for their bus to arrive in extremely cold temperatures. If possible, parents should drive their children to school if their bus is more than 15 minutes late.  For student safety on extremely cold days, bus drivers will be on the lookout for any walkers and will make every attempt to pick them up and provide them a safe warm ride to school.

Other tips for students:

  • Students should wait for the bus several feet back off the road in a safe place.
  • Use the handrail when boarding and exiting the bus to prevent slips and falls on icy steps.
  • Keep head and limbs inside the bus windows to prevent frostbite and other injuries.
  • Before crossing in front of the bus, wait for an “all clear” from the driver. Cross 10 feet in front of the bus so the driver can see you as you cross.
  • Avoid playing on snow piles at the bus stop.
  • Don’t try to retrieve personal items from under the bus that may have fallen.
  • Don’t push or shove when getting on or off the bus.
  • Don’t chase the bus or grab the bus when it’s moving.

For more information, view the KCKPS Inclement Weather guide at kckps.org/weather.
