New Appointments at KCKPS

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is proud to announce the following recent staff appointments: 

  • Dennis D. Covington has been named as the district’s new chief financial officer. Prior to accepting this role with KCKPS, Covington was the chief financial officer of Union County Public Schools in Monroe, North Carolina, where he had been responsible for planning, developing, organizing, implementing, directing and evaluating the organization’s fiscal function and performance since May 2017. Before his role at Union County Public Schools, Covington worked for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools from August 1997 to May 2017, where he worked his way up the ranks. His last position at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools was executive director of budget and evaluation, but he has also served as assistant budget director, budget specialist, and budget analyst for the school system located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Covington will begin his new role at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools on January 14, 2019. 
  • Keli Tuschman has been named as the chief of the Human Resources Department. Prior to joining KCKPS, she was the vice president of Operations, as well as the director of the Human Resources Department for Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas. In her vice president role, she was responsible for supporting functions of the college, which included Human Resources, Marketing, Information Technology and the Business Office. She ensured the development and adherence to operational plans for these functional areas in support of the college’s strategic plan. As the college’s director of Human Resources, she implemented annual performance evaluations, merit pay, and worked to redesign departments. Before joining the college, she was the director of Human Resources for Vega Energy in Houston, Texas. Tuschman will begin her new role at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools on January 7, 2019.
  • Dr. Eva Tucker-Nevels will serve as district improvement officer, effective January 2, 2019. She is currently an executive director for the district.
  • Dr. Stephen Scraggs, principal at Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, will have special assignment duties during the 2018-19 school year, effective January 2, 2019. As a result of this assignment, Rick Malone, the assistant principal of Sumner Academy, will serve as the acting lead administrator during the 2018-19 school year, effective January 2, 2019.
