There are large numbers of interest groups who communicate by mail organized into List Serves. When you decide which group you would like to be a part of, the process is simple.
You subscribe to the group (using the indicated mail address) and messages will arrive in your regular mail box UNTIL you unsubscribe.
There is no specific tool for List Serves ... you just use your regular mail tool.
Tile.Net [link] is a good place to start if you are looking for a well-organized list. The sorting is done and you can move through a pre-built index. You can subscribe directly from your browser using the mailto hyperlinks. Make sure your browser is configured with your e-mail address.
To Begin
Once you have subscribed to the List Serv of your choice (we used the directions below for this example) you mail a message to the indicated "subscriber's address" with nothing inside that message except sub and your full name.
Example: You can join this group by sending the message "sub DERRIDA your name" to listserv@cfrvm.cfr.usf.edu
Subscribing
To subscribe to a list, send an e-mail message to the list serve address with one line in the body of the letter.
SUB listname yourname
listname is the name of the list, and yourname is your full name
Unsubscribing
To unsubscribe to a list, send an e-mail message to the list serve address (as above) with one line in the body of the letter.
SIGNOFF listname
listname is the name of the list
Posting
If you have a message (comments, questions, etc.) that you wish to send to all members of a list, send it as e-mail to the list address for that list. Note that the list address is different from the listserv address. It gets very frustrating to continually get messages from new-comers requesting a subscription in the body of messages from the List Serve.
