Building Relationships
The primary focus of the First Things First initiative is to improve our schools to enable all students to be successful. Research shows that positive relationships between students, teachers, and parents result in increased student achievement. The Family Advocate System provides the framework for doing that.
This holistic approach toward building relationships has been implemented district-wide.
Talking About Success
Students say they trust their family advocate. They appreciate the connection, getting together with their family and their advocate to solve problems.
Teachers say the program helps them understand their students better, and makes it easier to find ways to help.
Families say they feel more connected to the school and know what they can do to support their child's success.
The district has already seen improvements in various educational benchmarks and in the performance and well-being of the students.
"They (advocates) are your teachers but they are also someone you can come and talk to when you have troubles."
