Each year, the state of Kansas holds a competition for State Teacher of the Year. An elementary and a secondary teacher are chosen from nominees from each school district.
In order to choose the district level nominees from the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, staff from each school select their building's STAR teacher. NOTE: See criteria at bottom of page...
KCKPS nominees for State Teacher of the Year were announced in late March. They are:

The criteria used to choose building level, and in turn the district level, nominees is as follows:
Must have a minimum of five years of teaching experience
Should be exceptionally skilled, dedicated, and inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn
Should have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues
Should play an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school
Should be poised, articulate, and possess the energy to withstand the busy schedule of public appearances required of the Kansas Teacher of the Year
Must be committeed to serving as a leader in efforts to improve schools, student performance, and the teaching profession in classes
