Betty Roberts

Argentine High School — Class of 1939

Betty RobertsWhile in high school, Betty Thoman Roberts' teachers gave her a reason to believe in her potential to succeed — especially her typing teacher, Walter Brink. He was impressed by Betty's typing accuracy and encouraged her to enter the Dictaphone Corporation Contest. Even though she reluctantly entered, she won the student division category that qualified her for a trip to the 1939 World's Fair in New York City.

Today, Betty is a retired elementary teacher from the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District. She stays active in a variety of community organizations including the Wyandotte County Library Board, United Methodist Women group, Monday and Sarah Ann Social Clubs, Kansas (Wyandotte County) Master Gardeners Program, and she coordinates and tutors the Project Read Adult Literacy Program at Trinity United Methodist Church. She is also involved with Argentine High School alumni activities.

Betty attended Morse Elementary and graduated from Argentine High School in 1939. She received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1967.

She lives in Kansas City, Kan., with her husband, Lawson, and has a daughter, Meredith Schraeder, and a granddaughter, Laura.
