(EDITOR'S NOTE: For a schedule of upcoming bus safety drills at area schools, contact one of the transportation staff members above).
Safety is their number one priority and this month, staff in the Transportation Department of the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools are reinforcing that.
Throughout April, bus drivers and transportation staff members are conducting bus evacuation drills for emergency preparedness at all schools in the district.
"Safety is our number one goal," said Lenora Miller, driver trainer. "We want our students to know what to do in the event of an emergency and practice makes perfect."
The evacuation drills have been taking place when busses arrive at school in the morning. Students are reminded about emergency exits and practice unboarding the bus quickly and efficiently. Drivers also remind students about safety equipment on board including a fire extinguisher, first aid kit and seatbelt cutter, among other items. Miller and Safety Coordinator Sandy Schiller are managing the effort along with the district's more than 200 bus drivers.
The Transportation Department conducts these drills once in the fall and once in the spring for all students who ride the bus.
