The new Maurice Holman Academy of Excellence Public Elementary Charter School is taking applications for fall enrollment May 15 through 30. Any student entering grades K through 5th who resides in Kansas City, Kansas may apply.
Set to open in August 2008, the mission of the charter school is to provide self-paced, performance-based learning with an emphasis on core knowledge, civic responsibility and entrepreneurship. Its academic program is designed to provide aggressive intervention to close "gaps" that have hindered acquisition of basic skills for students who are below proficiency for their grade levels.
The school is located at the former Parker Elementary School site, 3334 Haskell, and will serve approximately 100 students. School will begin on August 15.
Appointments must be made to complete an application by calling (913) 279-2312. Completing an application does not guarantee enrollment. Excess numbers of enrollment applications will require a public lottery (drawing) to determine the attendees.
The Maurice Holman Academy is the first public charter school of the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. In 2007, the North East Business Association received approval from the KCK Board of Education to open the new school.
