An energy savings and education program implemented in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools in 2009, has resulted in a savings of $2.73 million to date. In recognition of this achievement, the KCK Board of Education was presented with an Energy Excellence Award from Energy Education at its meeting on October 25.
"Reaching this saving mark is a significant milestone. The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools has achieved success by consistently implementing the organizational behavior-based approach to energy conservation and maintaining productive efforts at all levels of the organization," said Dr. William S. Spears, chairman and founder of Energy Education. "The superintendent and board, along with other administration, faculty and staff members are to be commended for clearly fulfilling their commitment to being good stewards of the taxpayers' money and the environment."
Energy savings specialists Malinda Threadgill and Curtis Stevenson credit the staff for their dedication to the program that tracks energy consumption and analyzes energy use. Staff have been open to discussions about energy savings and have adapted to conservation efforts such as turning off equipment and lights, and changing energy savings behaviors such as opening classroom windows or blocking open playground door during recess.
During the 20 months that the program has been in place, 33 of the district's buildings have been recognized with Energy Star Awards for their conservation success.
The program has surpassed its original projected savings by $400,000. If the program continues at this pace, it will save the district $23,268,000 over a 10-year period.
