Sumner Student Receives National Merit Scholarship

Sean Kerr, a recent graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, has been named the recipient of a National Merit Scholarship from Northeastern University (Boston). He was among 1,700 students from throughout the nation to be named scholarship recipients this week through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This final group of winners brings the number of 2011 National Merit Scholars to approximately 8,300.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four year of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

The scholarship application process begins with results from the SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semi-finalists then submitted a detailed scholarship application, which included writing an essay and describing contributions and leadership activities in high school and the community.

Kerr's career field of study is mathematics.
