There are two official start dates for the 2011-2012 school year for students in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS). Friday, August 12 will be the first full day of classes for preK-5, plus 6th grade students at all middle schools and 9th grade students at Washington, Wyandotte, Schlagle and Harmon high schools. At Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, 8th grade students, plus students new to Sumner Academy, will begin classes on Friday, August 12. There will be a full day of classes for students at all grade levels on Monday, August 15.
KCKPS has designed the start date for students entering middle and high school to precede the first full day of classes for all students to allow these students a chance to get oriented to a new environment and building.
Lunch will be served beginning August 12. Breakfast will be served beginning August 15. Meal prices for 2011-2012 have increased. They are as follows:
Parents of elementary and middle school students who are new to the district may call the district's Student Services office, (913) 279-2248, with questions concerning the school their child will attend and enrollment information.
High school students who are new to the district must enroll with their parent/guardian during the New Student Enrollment period set in August at the Central Office and Training Center, 2010 N. 59th St. Information that must be provided at the time of enrollment includes: proof of residence such as a rental agreement, escrow agreement or utility bill (Phone bills do not qualify); birth certificate; immunization records; and withdrawal information from the previous school. Transcripts from the child's previous school also are helpful. Enrollment dates and times are as follows:

| August 9, 2011 | 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. |
| August 10, 2011 | 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. |
| August 11, 2011 | 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. |
| August 12, 2011 | 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. |
Parents who have a child who is entering the school district for the first time should bring the following items with them at the time of enrollment:
