School Highlights
- All 1st graders participated in FROG (Facilitating Reading for Optimal Growth) for an additional 45 minutes of reading instruction in small groups.
- 5th grade attended Starbase Academy for 5 weeks this year. They learned scientific concepts through cooperative learning and authentic experiences.
- Emerson was involved in the community. Students walked in the Silver City Day Parade. We routinely picked up trash in Emerson Park. Emerson participated in Jump Rope for Heart and collected canned goods and mittens for Crosslines.
- All 3rd-5th graders presented small group projects using the Scientific Method for our Science Fair. Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classes submitted whole class projects. Many ribbons were awarded.
- Emerson had before and after school care available through Kidzone. Morning Kidzone was held at Emerson for our students and students from four other elementary schools. In the afternoon, Emerson students' went to another school for Kidzone.
- Emerson partnered with Kansas Kids Gear Up. Fourth graders participated in a six weekly workshops on careers. Fifth graders were provided tutoring.
- Family Nights focused on reading, math, science and physical education. During these nights, Emerson families came to the school to learn ways to help their children with the academic subject at home. A light dinner was also served.
- Parent Involvement is increasing at Emerson. PTA sponsored many events for students and teachers including a skating party, Santa's Secret Shop and a Spring Carnival. Site Council met monthly.
- Emerson had assemblies and field trips. Students enjoyed assemblies such as various Arts Partners programs, Black Firefighters role-playing, and Kansas Cultural History. Field trips were taken to several educational locations around the City. The Nelson Art Gallery, Kaleidoscope and Deanna Rose Farmstead were a few of our destinations as well as walking field trips to the nearby fire station and post office.
- Emerson had many great students. In addition to the above assemblies, each month an assembly was held to recognize a "Terrific Kid" and a "Student of the Month" from each classroom. The criteria for this included using good manners, doing classwork and homework and working hard. In addition, Students of the Month also had high academic achievement. Each Student of the Month received a t-shirt.
- Safety and student well-being was a concern for Emerson. First graders were taught to dial 911 using a simulator. Tornado drills and fire drills were practiced routinely.
- The Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Program allowed students the opportunity to add to personal libraries from a book distribution that was offered.
- The Student Improvement Teams met weekly to ensure the academic and behavioral success for all students.
- Intermediate students had the opportunity to help Emerson by being on our Student Council.
- Emerson was a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) school. PBS was funded by a grant through the University of Kansas. This allowed us to help our students improve their behavior by having monthly behavior parties and lunchroom rewards. Our behavior parties included going bowling, making ice cream sundaes and making valentines. Golden Spoons were earned by classrooms at lunch time; whole class rewards such as a popcorn party or read-in could be earned.
- Emerson used NWEA-MAP testing in reading and math for our intermediate students. We used the data from the assessments to help teachers plan instruction.
- In partnership with KU, we continued to write assessments that linked the Math Investigations curriculum and the Kansas State Assessment.
- Emerson provided after school tutoring in reading and math for students.
- After school activities for students included The Good News Club and Girl Scouts.

This building report card is a brief summary of how your school and students are performing and the impact of your local school improvement plan. However, it should not be used as a single source to judge students or school accomplishments. No single report can tell the whole story of a district's or school's education program. This report card does not provide information about curriculum, teaching methods, special programs, the "climate" of your school or the performance of individual teachers or administrators.
In addition, this report card is not a way of "rating" or "ranking" schools. Because of the distinct community and student characteristics, direct comparison between schools or districts are invalid. Rank-ordering school districts or schools is a clear misuse of the information. Rather, the information should be used to access local strengths and weaknesses based on past performance and to plan program improvements.
