School Highlights
- Positive Behavior Supports Program: New Chelsea students had four behavior expectations. They were: Be Respectful, Be a Learner, Be in Control, and Be a Problem Solver. Students earned tickets for positive behavior. Small learning communities set goals for the number of tickets they would earn. We set school-wide goals. When the goals were met, we had school-wide celebrations.
- Family Night: New Chelsea teachers, students and parents participated in Family Night. Teachers planned stations for which the students and their parents rotated and learning activities the students engaged in here at school. It was a great time for parents to learn from their children.
- Parent Liaison: We had a parent liaison who worked closely with staff and administration to support and connect parents to the school. Many services were provided to parents, including connecting parents and students to community-linked services and coordinating our school carnival.
- School Improvement Team: The SIT Team met regularly to discuss student needs (both academic and behavioral), classroom interventions, and the impact of the interventions for students.
- School Carnival: The students, parents and teachers had fun playing carnival games, winning prizes, and eating things like hot dogs, nachos and snow cones at our first annual New Chelsea Carnival. Our parent liaison contacted a local carnival company to provide the games, food machines and even a hot-air filled obstacle climb and slide! Teachers volunteered their time, and the neighborhood showed up. Everyone had a wonderful time!
- Family Advocacy: This program was supported by all staff. Each student had two advocates that worked as a team to implement the district's Family Advocacy System. Parent contacts were made regularly.
- Scholastic ReadAbout: Students use this computer program and its expository books to gain knowledge about reading vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. The goal of the program was to develop more active and strategic readers.
- English as a Second Language: Because of the ever-increasing number of Hispanic students attending New Chelsea, teachers continued to take classes that assisted them with teaching these students.
Mission Statement
Chelsea Elementary School will use effective instruction in a safe school community to develop life-long learners who become accountable and responsible citizens.
This building report card is a brief summary of how your school and students are performing and the impact of your local school improvement plan. However, it should not be used as a single source to judge students or school accomplishments. No single report can tell the whole story of a district's or school's education program. This report card does not provide information about curriculum, teaching methods, special programs, the "climate" of your school or the performance of individual teachers or administrators.
In addition, this report card is not a way of "rating" or "ranking" schools. Because of the distinct community and student characteristics, direct comparison between schools or districts are invalid. Rank-ordering school districts or schools is a clear misuse of the information. Rather, the information should be used to access local strengths and weaknesses based on past performance and to plan program improvements.
