School Highlights
- Special Education Collaboration: We are proud to say that we focused on building a collaborative model of education between our special education population and our general education students. In the first phase, we moved students from fully inclusive classrooms to classes with a general education instructor and a special education professional. This allowed our special education students to hear and learn on grade level material while supporting them on a needs basis. We are pleased to report this had a positive impact on our Kansas State Assessments: Math rose from 12.5% to 15.2% and Reading rose from 21.4% to 32.6%. Both of these scores achieved our AYP targets. Phase two, will begin in 2007 – 2008 focusing on instruction.
- Mentoring & Tutoring Program: Our mentoring program brought in several tutors from our partnership with KU, Site Council, & Youth Friends. They signed up for an eight week commitment and served approximately 75 students.
- Educational Talent Search: Many of our students (125) were involved in KU's talent search program, which included academic assistance and support, as well as special services to foster long range academic plans.
- Student Recognition: Quarterly honor roll assemblies were held at each grade level to acknowledge student success.
- Excellence in Education Awards Program: Each quarter selected students are honored by KU Med Center, Rosedale Development Association and Rosedale Middle School for maintaining high academic standards, maintaining good citizenship, and having perfect or near perfect attendance.
- Saturday Academy: Saturday Academy was a community partnership initiative spearheaded by the Rosedale Community Project and the University of Kansas, School of Social Welfare. During the eight Saturdays each semester students learned about photography, did art projects, took a field trip, made masks, and completed Community Service Projects.
- Youth Friends: The Youth Friends volunteers worked with individuals and small groups of students for tutoring and mentoring. Youth Friends sponsored a Math and Science Saturday Academy at the Kansas City Kansas Community College. They also sponsored after school activities involving poetry and video technology. Youth Friends in conjunction with Rosedale Development and KC Mentoring Imitative sponsored a community gardening project.
- KCK Community Gardens Project: Science students worked to help build our schools' organic "Raised Bed" Garden.
- Math & Literacy Night: Students and families were invited to a night of food, fun, prizes, and math and literacy activities. Free books were given to every child who attended.
- School Wide Read–In: Students all participated in a grade level read-in to promote the importance of reading.
- Pages in Topeka: Selected students were allowed to page in the capital building through their Social Studies classes.
- Spelling Bee: Rosedale students competed first, in their language arts classrooms, leading to the winners competing in a school-wide spelling bee, and finally the overall winner competed in the Wyandotte county spelling bee. We look forward to participating annually.
- KU Journalism Class: We were very privileged to collaborate with the College of Journalism at KU in an after-school program. Several students were selected to participate in graduate level journalism course offered on site to grad students. The objective was for these grad students to mentor Rosedale middle school students in a mini course on journalism. Through their course work our students learned how to be "on-the-job" reporters. They learned to formulate questions and write summary articles from their interview notes. They also had the opportunity to serve as school reporters during special events. They culminating activities were visiting the Kansas City Star and watching a live T.V. broadcast at one of the local stations.
- Enrichment Activities: Our students stayed after school for many programs such as; robotics, drama troupe, debate, sports teams, tutoring, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, chess club, Reading Achievers, Math Achievers, art activities, mentoring programs, student council, pep club, band, choir, and more.
- Kauffman Scholars: A comprehensive, multi-year program designed to help promising students in Kansas City prepare for and complete a college education.
- Community Service: Participated in United Way, cleaning up the neighborhood projects, and partnered with KU and the Rosedale Development Association for joint projects.
Mission Statement
Rosedale Middle School develops skills for life-long learning.
This building report card is a brief summary of how your school and students are performing and the impact of your local school improvement plan. However, it should not be used as a single source to judge students or school accomplishments. No single report can tell the whole story of a district's or school's education program. This report card does not provide information about curriculum, teaching methods, special programs, the "climate" of your school or the performance of individual teachers or administrators.
In addition, this report card is not a way of "rating" or "ranking" schools. Because of the distinct community and student characteristics, direct comparison between schools or districts are invalid. Rank-ordering school districts or schools is a clear misuse of the information. Rather, the information should be used to access local strengths and weaknesses based on past performance and to plan program improvements.
