School Highlights
- Student Leadership: Student Council was a group of students representing all grade levels who planned activities for their peers. Community outreach activities were a primary focus of the group. Students also participated in various clubs and groups in the building. Peer mediators were trained and helped other students to solve minor problems.
- Extended Learning Opportunities: An alternative school program existed for students who had difficulty functioning in the regular school setting because of behavior. This program was an option to long term suspension. West offered math and reading tutoring after school to improve in these areas. Young Audiences worked after school on Wednesday as a Hip-Hop and Improvisation workshop.
- Emphasis on Math and Reading: West Middle School made AYP in the 2006-2007 school year. An 88 minute block of class time was allocated for Math and Reading Instruction. Math and Reading Achievers was implemented, this was a tutoring program during the regular school day. The use of eInstruction in math provided data to assess student needs. School Improvement Plan focused on active engagement, vocabulary acquisition, higher level questioning and accessing prior knowledge.
- Stronger Relationships: Family Advocacy class allowed for each student to have a relationship with an adult at school. Family Advocacy days were incorporated into the 2006-2007 school to allow families to meet with teachers, set goals and have a contact person at the school to work with them and their student. West also added the Adopt a School program, a partnership with local churches to address various needs within the school.
- College Opportunities: The Kauffman Foundation program was designed to support students through their middle and high school years and into college. The University of Kansas Talent Search offered special opportunities for students through tutoring and summer enrichment activities. A select group of students participated in Leadership Academy sponsored by KCKCC.
Mission Statement
Preparing students to be lifelong learners.
This building report card is a brief summary of how your school and students are performing and the impact of your local school improvement plan. However, it should not be used as a single source to judge students or school accomplishments. No single report can tell the whole story of a district's or school's education program. This report card does not provide information about curriculum, teaching methods, special programs, the "climate" of your school or the performance of individual teachers or administrators.
In addition, this report card is not a way of "rating" or "ranking" schools. Because of the distinct community and student characteristics, direct comparison between schools or districts are invalid. Rank-ordering school districts or schools is a clear misuse of the information. Rather, the information should be used to access local strengths and weaknesses based on past performance and to plan program improvements.
