West Middle School Uniform Policy
Tops:
- Colors: Solid white or black
- Tops must have sleeves ranging from short to full length and must have a collar.
- Collared shirts and collared blouses will be oxford, polo, or turtleneck.
- Shirts may not have lettering, pictures, logos, labels or designs.
- Shirts must fit the student and be worn tucked in at all times.
- Plain white or black sweaters and pullover sweatshirts may be worn over the collared shirt or turtleneck. A black or white undershirt may be worn under the uniform shirt. Both boys and girls must wear appropriate undergarments.
- No hooded sweatshirts allowed!
Bottoms:
- Colors: Solid black or khaki (NO DENIM JEANS, SWEAT PANTS, STRETCH OR SPORTS PANTS).
- Styles: Slacks, shorts, skirts, skorts, or jumpers.
- Styles must fit at the waist or a belt must be worn. (NO SAGGING WILL BE ALLOWED). Hems of slacks must not drag on the ground.
- Hems on shorts, skorts and jumpers must be no shorter than the place on the leg where the fingertips would fall with arms hanging naturally at the sides.
Additional Uniform Requirements for all Students:
- No oversized clothing – All styles must fit the child.
- No "headwear" is to be worn, unless approved for religious purposes.
- Articles related to gang or gang activities such as jewelry, emblems, symbols or other related items will be prohibited.
Rationale for School Uniform Policy:
- Uniforms will allow our students and staff to focus more on teaching and learning.
- Uniforms will help eliminate problems related to socio-economic differences.
- Uniforms help students to develop a sense of pride and "professionalism" related to their jobs as learners, thereby increasing student achievement.
- Uniforms would be cost effective for parents with multiple children in the school.
Students who refuse to comply will not be allowed to attend classes. A parent contact will be made prior to action.
